What is spaying?
Spaying is the surgical removal of the ovaries (and often the uterus) through a small abdominal incision. From the ASPCA website: “Spaying helps prevent uterine infections and breast cancer, which is fatal in about 50 percent of dogs and 90 percent of cats. Spaying your pet before her first heat offers the best protection from these diseases.” Spaying your pet will also end her heat cycles and prevent unwanted pregnancies.
What is neutering?

Neutering is the surgical removal of both testicles through a small incision in the scrotal sac. From the ASPCA website: “Besides preventing unwanted litters, neutering your male companion prevents testicular cancer, if done before six months of age.” Neutering also reduces male pets’ instinct to roam and mark their territory with urine and reduces the risk of prostate disease.
